Kalyani Strategic Systems Limited (KSSL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) signed a memorandum of understanding in Kolkata on Thursday, five March 2026 to strengthen India's shipbuilding capabilities in marine engineering. The agreement establishes a collaborative framework between the two organisations to focus on propulsion systems, steering gear and integrated platform management systems. The partnership is intended to leverage complementary strengths to develop indigenous solutions for both naval and commercial ship platforms.

The collaboration is aimed at enhancing technological depth and long term operational capabilities in the maritime domain. Workstreams will prioritise indigenisation of propulsion architecture and associated subsystems to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and to support lifecycle sustainment. The partners envisage that joint development and integration activities will create a pipeline of domestic engineering solutions adaptable across vessel types.

Kalyani Strategic Systems Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Bharat Forge Limited and is positioned to apply more than five decades of engineering and manufacturing experience to defence and aerospace platforms. Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited, operating under the administrative control of the Ministry of Defence, contributes naval shipbuilding expertise including design and construction of combat and patrol vessels. The memorandum is presented as a contribution to national efforts to achieve Atmanirbharta in defence manufacturing.

Stakeholders expect the partnership to support both naval modernisation and commercial shipbuilding needs while nurturing domestic supply chains. The collaboration aligns with the broader Make in India agenda and aims to foster long term strategic autonomy in maritime technologies. Further operational details and project timelines will be developed through the joint working groups established under the memorandum. The partners will convene technical reviews to prioritise deliverables.
