The Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) Yard 3039, Sanghmitra, was launched at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, on 20 May 2026 by Mrs Sarita Vatsayan in the presence of Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, Vice Chief of the Naval Staff. The ceremony was conducted with full naval honours and ceremonial splendour and was attended by senior dignitaries from the Indian Navy (IN), the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and GRSE. The event underlined the navy's continuing emphasis on indigenous design and construction and its alignment with the Government of India's Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives.

Construction of 11 NGOPVs is being undertaken concurrently at two shipyards, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers in Kolkata and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) in Goa, to expedite delivery and standardise platforms. These indigenously designed and built ships will augment existing Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) and Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels in multi-domain operations, including surveillance and defence in areas of interest, search and rescue, protection of offshore assets, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief and anti-piracy missions. The programme aims to enhance maritime security and operational reach across India's exclusive economic zone and adjacent waters.

The ships derive their names from India’s heritage, with the launched vessel named Sanghmitra after the daughter of King Ashoka, and the crest design depicting the Ursa Major constellation alongside a red and white lighthouse motif. The choice of names and iconography reflects a deliberate effort to link naval platforms to cultural history while signifying vigilance and guidance in maritime operations. The project represents an important milestone in the Navy’s pursuit of indigenisation and capability enhancement.

The concurrent build at two yards is expected to increase shipbuilding throughput while fostering supply chain maturity and technical skills within the domestic industry. The launch reaffirms institutional commitments to self-reliance in defence shipbuilding and to delivering versatile surface platforms capable of sustained patrol and response tasks. The Sanghmitra launch, therefore, marks a tangible step towards strengthening maritime preparedness and the protection of national interests at sea.
