SHM Group has launched Ocean Crewzer 8, a 29-metre high-speed aluminium passenger craft, at its shipyard in Mumbai. Designed and built in-house, the vessel has been developed to meet current marine operational and safety requirements for India’s waterway operations.
The vessel has been built entirely with aluminium, a preferred material for fast passenger craft due to its lightweight structure and higher fuel efficiency compared to conventional steel vessels. The launch is part of SHM Group’s ongoing shipbuilding programme, focused on developing vessels for India’s growing maritime needs.
Saifuddin Hajee, Chairman and Managing Director, SHM Group, said the vessel reflects disciplined work by the company’s team and reinforces its commitment to building vessels domestically in line with the Aatmanirbhar spirit.
The construction process included erection and fit-up of three individual blocks, alignment, dry surveys of blocks, engine girders and machinery foundations. APT and hydrotests of tanks were also carried out to validate safety and operational performance. Outfitting items, propulsion systems and bow thruster installations were surveyed before launch.
Aliasgar Hajee, CEO, Shipbuilding and Ship Management, SHM Group, said Ocean Crewzer 8 was fully built at the company’s Mumbai yard and reflects domestic shipbuilding capability.
The final launch was carried out using two 300-tonne cranes after a series of safety checks. SHM Group said the vessel strengthens its focus on producing high-speed aluminium vessels in India and contributing to the country’s indigenous shipbuilding capacity.
