Union Minister for Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated and laid the foundation for port projects worth approximately Rs 15 billion (bn) at Tuticorin port in Tamil Nadu on Monday. The initiatives included the establishment of the VOC Maritime Heritage Museum, the laying of a foundation stone for an eight megawatt (MW) wind farm and a five megawatt-hour battery energy storage system and the launch of corporate social responsibility projects at the port. The projects aim to combine heritage conservation with renewable energy deployment.

The minister described the region as possessing an ancient maritime tradition that aligns with national aspirations and said the initiatives were intended to reinforce that legacy. He referred to the presence of the Sengol in the new parliament as an indication of the Prime Minister's respect for deep rooted Tamil traditions and said that such gestures reflected the timeless wisdom of the local community. The event was presented as part of a broader narrative linking culture and infrastructure.

The minister also outlined national investments in recent years, stating that more than Rs three trillion (tn) had been expended on infrastructure expansion alongside sustainable and technological advancement. He said the focus on ports included modernising facilities, enhancing logistical connectivity and integrating cleaner energy solutions to reduce emissions and increase operational efficiency. The wind farm and energy storage systems were described as steps towards decarbonisation and energy reliability for port operations.

Officials at Tuticorin portrayed the projects as likely to stimulate local economic activity, generate skilled employment and support community initiatives under corporate social responsibility programmes. The establishment of the museum was expected to boost cultural tourism while the renewable energy installations aimed to lower operational costs and improve resilience. Implementation timelines and funding mechanisms were said to be overseen by port authorities in coordination with central agencies.
