Titagarh Rail Systems (TRSL), through its Shipbuilding and Maritime Systems (SMS) Division, has secured its single largest order to date worth Rs 4.67 billion from Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE). The contract covers construction, trials and delivery of two Coastal Research Vessels (CRVs) for the Geological Survey of India (GSI). 

The vessels will boost India’s maritime research capabilities, supporting advanced seabed geology studies, mineral exploration, ocean environment monitoring and shipboard scientific analysis. Designed for long-duration missions and real-time data collection, each CRV will operate within India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) at depths of 5 to 1000 metres. 

Built with a 30-year service life, the ships will meet Indian and international standards and feature eco-friendly electric propulsion, 360-degree rotatable thrusters and DP1 dynamic positioning for precise manoeuvring. Onboard, three laboratories will house 22 types of advanced scientific equipment for data processing and analysis.

This order also stands as a testimony to the trust placed in our shipbuilding and maritime systems capabilities, reaffirming our commitment to delivering world-class vessels that advance India’s strategic priorities in maritime research as well as sustainability.” 

TRSL has earlier delivered Coastal Research Vessels for the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), one of which was showcased at the 12th Presidential Fleet Review — a rare recognition for a non-defence ship. With over 35 vessels successfully delivered, the company continues to strengthen its position as a trusted partner in India’s shipbuilding and maritime innovation sector. 

The new CRVs will also provide comfortable accommodation and recreation facilities for scientists and crew, ensuring a supportive environment for life at sea.
