The Vidarbha region is on the cusp of a major energy upgrade, with piped natural gas (PNG) supply set to begin shortly from Adani’s Dhamra Port LNG terminal in Odisha. The project, initiated in 2023, has already seen the pipeline extended up to Nagpur Airport, with further expansion planned across the city in the coming years.

Dhamra Port currently sources liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Qatar. After being regasified at the terminal, the gas is handed over to GAIL (India) Limited for cross-country distribution. In its first year, the terminal supplied one million tonnes of LNG, which doubled to two million tonnes in 2024 and has stabilised at that level in 2025.

Officials confirmed that the Vidarbha supply is now at an advanced stage of readiness. “The region will soon have access to reliable and affordable natural gas, ensuring households and industries can shift away from dependence on LPG cylinders,” a GAIL official said.

Haryana City Gas (HCG) has already begun supplying gas in limited areas through the Mumbai-Nagpur-Jharsuguda pipeline. The company is laying additional pipelines to extend coverage across MIHAN, Hingna MIDC, and Chinchbhuwan. Households in Sitabuldi and surrounding areas are expected to receive PNG connections by 2026.

GAIL is also nearing completion of a 700-km pipeline along the Samruddhi Mahamarg, with more than 90 per cent of work finished, which will further enhance energy access for Maharashtra.
