Keel Laid for First Next-Gen Offshore Patrol Vessel at MDL

The keel-laying ceremony for Yard 16401, the first of six Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs) for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), was held on 22 July 2025 at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL), Mumbai.
This 117-metre vessel will boast a range of 5,000 nautical miles, accommodate 11 officers and 110 personnel, and achieve a top speed of 23 knots. It will feature cutting-edge technologies, including AI-based predictive maintenance, Remote Piloted Drones, an Integrated Bridge System (IBS), and an Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS).
The ceremony was presided over by Deputy Inspector General RH Nandodkar, Chief Staff Officer (Tech), ICG Regional Headquarters (North West), in the presence of MDL’s Executive Director (Ship Building), A Vinod, along with senior officials from both the ICG and MDL.
These NGOPVs are being built under a contract signed on 20 December 2023 and are fully indigenous under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category, aligning with the Government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision.
