India’s defence production surged to Rs 1.27 trillion in FY 2023-24, reflecting a 174% rise since 2014-15, propelled by the Make in India initiative. The Ministry of Defence secured a record 193 contracts worth over Rs 2,090.5 billion in 2024-25, with 92% awarded to domestic firms. Defence exports reached Rs 210.83 billion, growing 30 times in a decade, with India supplying military equipment to over 100 countries. More than 14,000 items have been indigenised under the SRIJAN initiative, with 3,000 listed under Positive Indigenisation Lists. The government aims to achieve Rs 3 trillion in production and Rs 500 billion in exports by 2029, further solidifying India’s role as a global defence manufacturing hub.
