MDL, Swan Defence Sign Pact to Build Landing Platform Docks for Navy

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDL) has signed an exclusive teaming agreement with Swan Defence and Heavy Industries (SDHI) for the design and construction of Landing Platform Docks (LPDs) for the Indian Navy. The agreement was signed during India Maritime Week 2025 in Mumbai.

MDL, a Navratna company under the Ministry of Defence, and SDHI, India’s largest shipbuilding and heavy fabrication company, will jointly deliver these advanced vessels. The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) recently approved the acquisition of LPDs, which will enhance the Navy’s amphibious warfare and disaster relief capabilities.

Under the agreement, MDL will contribute its expertise in ship design, project management, and system integration, while SDHI will offer its world-class shipbuilding infrastructure — the largest in the country.

This collaboration represents a major step in public–private partnership (PPP) in defence manufacturing. By combining the efficiency and flexibility of the private sector with the proven quality of a leading public shipyard, the partnership aims to ensure faster delivery, improved quality, and cost efficiency in the construction of these complex vessels.
