Agartala is preparing to become more inclusive and environmentally friendly through plans to introduce dedicated bicycle lanes and barrier-free roads under its Smart City initiative. The city will implement dedicated cycling lanes along major routes, including a stretch from Agartala Airport to Lichubagan, as part of the Urban Mobility Agenda 2025. The initiative aims to provide safe, separate lanes for cyclists to encourage green, accessible, healthy, and affordable transportation, benefiting a wide range of residents such as students and working women.
Alongside cycling infrastructure, there is a strong focus on ensuring road accessibility for persons with disabilities (Divyangjan). Future road developments under the Smart City project will be designed to eliminate barriers for wheelchair users, promoting inclusivity throughout the city. Success of these initiatives depends on the active participation and support of Agartala’s citizens.
The announcement coincided with the 7th World Bicycle Day event, jointly organised by Track and Trail Agartala and Agartala Cycle Holic. The event included a cycling rally, awareness sessions, and youth interactions on sustainable mobility, with participation from over 42 student groups from schools and colleges, including many women. City officials, including representatives from Agartala Smart City Limited and the Sports Authority of India, flagged off the rally and participated in the ride, reinforcing the city’s commitment to a healthier and greener future.
These infrastructure plans align with a wider national movement towards sustainable and inclusive urban living, prioritising non-motorised transport and accessible design.
