The Town Square Project in Porvorim is likely to be completed and opened to the public by August, according to Goa Tourism Minister Rohan A. Khaunte. The project, being developed as a major civic and cultural hub, is being implemented by Goa Tourism with central government funding of over Rs 1.2 billion.

Spread across more than 11,000 sq m in Porvorim, around 9 km north of Panjim, the Town Square is envisioned as a vibrant public space for community engagement, cultural activities and social interaction. Authorities are targeting Independence Day for its inauguration.

Speaking after a review meeting, Khaunte said the project remains a priority initiative and is being executed with a completion target of 15 August. The review focused on project progress, road redevelopment, traffic management and coordination among various departments involved in the development.

As part of the project, adjoining service roads and parallel stretches will also be upgraded and beautified to enhance the overall urban environment. Officials also reviewed progress on the ongoing National Highway works, including road construction, drainage systems, culverts and cross-drains. While most critical works have been completed, the remaining activities are being expedited.

The meeting also addressed measures to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion, including opening alternative routes towards Mapusa. Issues relating to service roads, elevated pathways, traffic bottlenecks and pending hot-mix works were discussed, with departments directed to implement suitable solutions.

Officials from the Tourism, Public Works, National Highways, Sewerage, Electricity and Water Supply departments are working in coordination to ensure timely completion of the project. Khaunte emphasised the need for effective planning and inter-departmental cooperation, particularly during the monsoon season, to achieve the targeted completion schedule.
