Puducherry Inaugurates Smart City Power, Housing, Sports Projects

Three major infrastructure projects under the Smart City Mission were inaugurated in Puducherry by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, marking a key step in strengthening urban services, housing and sports facilities in the Union Territory.

A modern mini stadium has been developed at Anna Thidal, a historic playground spanning about 9,600 sq metres that has served local schools and residents for more than a century. Earlier lacking basic amenities, the facility has been upgraded at a final cost of Rs 170 million, against an initial estimate of Rs 121.9 million under the Smart City Mission. The stadium now features galleries seating 4,500 spectators on the eastern and western sides, an additional two-sided gallery for 500 spectators, and a central stage on the southern side. Supporting infrastructure includes parking for 1,500 two-wheelers beneath the galleries, an administrative office, dormitory, multipurpose hall, toilets, and full water, drainage and electrical systems. The stadium is expected to benefit students from several nearby schools as well as the general public.

Significant upgrades were also completed in Puducherry’s power infrastructure. As part of the project, 26 oil-type distribution transformers have been replaced with compact substations equipped with dry-type transformers and SCADA-controllable ring main units, making them maintenance-free. In addition, 19 km of overhead power lines in coastal areas have been replaced with 11 kV high-tension underground cables and associated equipment. Officials said the upgrade will help eliminate power disruptions during cyclones and heavy rainfall. The total cost of the power infrastructure project stands at Rs 282 million.

In the housing sector, 220 new tenements have been constructed for economically weaker section families at Chinnayapuram. The project replaces old and dilapidated housing earlier occupied by sanitation workers of the Puducherry Municipality. Built across six blocks, the new housing complex includes internal roads, water supply, drainage, sewage connections, lifts and electricity. The project has been completed, and the tenements are ready for allotment to beneficiaries.

Officials said the projects collectively reflect Puducherry’s focus on inclusive urban development, resilient infrastructure and improved quality of life under the Smart City Mission.
