Tripura will introduce India's first state-level Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy to promote technology across sectors, with support from the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) and the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog). The policy forms part of a State Support Mission designed to build a local innovation ecosystem.

Agartala will receive AI-based smart city solutions for urban management and public services, including traffic and parking management, power supply, drinking water, flood control, waste handling and property assessment. Technology companies have expressed interest and officials indicated that pilot projects will be prioritised to address immediate challenges. The measures aim to improve service delivery and municipal efficiency through data-driven decision making and automation.

The Tripura State Innovation Mission was launched at the International Exhibition Centre in Hapania and presented as a first-of-its-kind state initiative that builds on administrative reforms, digital governance and start-up friendly policies. Officials noted that government functioning in the state is entirely paperless from the Cabinet and Secretariat to village councils and Gram Panchayats. The mission is supported by AIM and aligns with NITI Aayog objectives to strengthen local innovation ecosystems.

The state has collaborated with the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIM Calcutta), the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi), the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM Bangalore) and T-Hub to establish the mission and the T-NEST incubation platform. Support will target enterprises in agriculture, green technology, digital services, tourism and healthcare, and plans include a Tripura Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence with assistance from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). Additional proposals envisage a Tripura IT and Data Economic Zone and an IT park with co-working spaces to promote the IT and data centre ecosystem and position the state as a regional innovation hub in the Northeast.
