Tripura will introduce India’s first state?level artificial intelligence (AI) policy to promote technology use across sectors and to provide AI?driven smart solutions in Agartala for urban management and public services. The policy will be developed with support from the Atal Innovation Mission and NITI Aayog and will prioritise applications such as traffic control and municipal services. The state expects the measures to improve efficiency and service delivery in the capital.

The chief minister, Manik Saha, launched the Tripura State Innovation Mission at the International Exhibition Centre in Hapania in the presence of the Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh. He characterised the mission as a first?of?its?kind state initiative and said Tripura has pursued administrative reforms, digital governance and startup?friendly policies. He also noted that government functioning from the Cabinet and Secretariat to village councils and Gram Panchayats is paperless.

The launch is part of NITI Aayog’s State Support Mission, which aims to help states build local innovation ecosystems, and the Tripura State Innovation Mission will receive backing from the Atal Innovation Mission to encourage entrepreneurship and technology adoption. The Tripura Institution for Transformation and the Department of Information Technology have partnered with the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore and T?Hub to establish the initiative and the T?NEST programme. The mission will target enterprises in agriculture, green technology, digital services, tourism and healthcare and aims to position Tripura as a regional innovation hub in the Northeast.

Officials indicated that AI systems will be deployed in Agartala to address traffic congestion, parking, power supply, drinking water, flood control, waste management and property assessment, and that leading technology companies have shown interest in collaboration. The state plans to set up a Tripura AI Centre of Excellence with support from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. Plans also include a Tripura IT and Data Economic Zone and an IT park with co?working spaces to boost the IT and data centre ecosystem.
