Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav announced that the central government will extend financial support to waste recycling startups as part of its broader efforts to promote sustainable practices. Speaking at the Juhu Beach Cleanup Campaign in Mumbai during International Coastal Clean-up Day, Yadav emphasised the government’s commitment to environmental protection through waste management, energy and water conservation, and a ban on single-use plastics.

Yadav highlighted that the Ministry of Environment has issued guidelines to provide one-time financial assistance to startups focused on waste recycling. “We are committed to supporting these initiatives. Our objective is not only to encourage recycling but also to prevent littering on beaches and roads. Our focus will be on conserving energy and water, reducing food waste, promoting e-waste management, and advocating for a healthier lifestyle,” he stated.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who was also present at the event, underlined the importance of maintaining the state's 720 km-long coastline, noting its potential to boost tourism. He mentioned that the state’s cleanliness campaign, launched on September 17 at Girgaum Chowpatty in South Mumbai, will continue until October 2.

Shinde further noted that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will resume its deep-cleaning initiative post-monsoon, which involves cleaning roads using recycled water to minimise pollution levels. He credited the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for increasing public awareness about the importance of cleanliness. "Citizens are participating enthusiastically, and such drives are helping to reduce pollution and enhance the overall environment," he added. (The Financial Express)
