Chennai Plans 24x7 Water For 63k Homes in Two Southern Zones

Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) will appoint a private concessionaire to modernise the Pallipattu and Thiruvanmiyur water-distribution systems under a Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Transfer contract on a hybrid-annuity basis. Covering 326 km of new and refurbished mains, the scheme will deliver continuous, pressurised supply to about 62 975 households and 3 373 commercial premises across south Chennai.

The partner firm must map every asset, confirm hydraulic models and prepare a phased implementation plan aimed at cutting non-revenue water, conserving energy and extending service to unserved streets. CMWSSB currently pumps 50 MLD to the two zones; demand is forecast to reach 53 MLD by 2036. The authority has set a 730-day deadline for completion once work begins.

By upgrading meters, pressure-management valves and storage, officials expect higher collection efficiency, better water quality and fewer leak-related roadworks—key objectives under the board’s city-wide service-level improvement drive.
