Delhi’s Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Verma has directed officials to expedite the maintenance of the Munak Canal, the installation of smart street lights, and other ongoing infrastructure projects.

Verma said that ensuring well-managed and clean water resources remains a top priority for the government, given the capital’s growing demand for potable water.

Focus on water security and canal upkeep

The Munak Canal, which carries water from Haryana to Delhi, is a crucial source feeding the Haiderpur Water Treatment Plant. To strengthen its management and protection, Verma chaired a review meeting with senior officials from the Delhi Jal Board and PWD.

He noted that the canal faces challenges such as pollution, unauthorised water extraction, and maintenance gaps, and stressed that these would be addressed on a priority basis.

Smart LED street lighting for safer roads

Verma also reviewed the progress of the smart LED street lighting project, which aims to replace outdated lamps with energy-efficient and cost-effective LED lights.

Under this initiative, around 96,000 street lights will be installed or upgraded across the city, including at dark spots to enhance visibility and road safety. The minister said the project will also advance Delhi’s transition into a smart and sustainable city.

CSR and urban beautification efforts

In addition, Verma met with various organisations to mobilise CSR funds for public service projects across Delhi. “Effective public-private partnerships are vital for achieving welfare goals,” he said.

The government is also developing a model for the maintenance and utilisation of spaces under flyovers, with plans for beautification and community-friendly redevelopment in several areas.

These initiatives, Verma added, reflect the government’s commitment to improving urban infrastructure, public safety, and environmental sustainability in the national capital.
