Goa Targets Critical Mineral Recovery From Iron Ore Dumps
Preliminary technical work will combine airborne and ground based geophysical mapping with targeted sampling and beneficiation trials at pilot scale. Laboratory assays have identified elevated concentrations of several elements classified as critical for clean energy technologies, including rare earth elements, nickel and cobalt, and the teams will quantify recoverable grades and tonnages. Independent audits and life cycle assessments will be commissioned to measure greenhouse gas savings, set monitoring protocols for water use and tailings stability, and verify compliance with national sustainability benchmarks robustly.
Reprocessing tailings is expected to reduce environmental liabilities, lower the footprint of fresh mining and recover valuable materials for domestic industry and export. The initiative is projected to create local employment during survey and plant construction phases and to provide feedstock for downstream manufacturers. Regulators will require detailed environmental management plans and community consultation before full scale operations proceed.
The MoM will present a technical and financial report within the next twelve months and invite expressions of interest from private investors and public sector enterprises. Funding options under central and state schemes will be explored alongside potential public private partnerships and technology transfer agreements. Stakeholders will also consider market demand, logistics and compliance with mineral resource governance frameworks. The state government intends to prioritise sustainable recovery that aligns with broader goals of circular economy and resource security.
