On Saturday, civic body officials told the media that the Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC) has planned to build two water treatment plants in Jadavpur and Tollygunge to supply portable water because the area has a severe lack of water.

A new water treatment plant is to be developed in Briji, New Garia, which will have a capacity to produce 10 million gallons of water each day. Another water treatment plant will be built on the campus of the Dhapa water treatment plant, which will produce 20 million gallons of water per day.

The potable water produced from both the plants will be sufficient to fulfil the needs of the people living there, along with the areas of east EM Bypass like Anandapur and Mukundapur, a senior engineer said.

As per a study, the plants will serve the people for the next 30 years, but it is subject to no further inclusion of the areas into the municipal corporation, a CMC official said.

Since the areas depend on underground water drawn through pumps, the water supply is inadequate, and building new plants is the only option to meet the demand of the people.

According to the engineers, the two plants would benefit the entire division. A proposal has been sent to the finance department seeking funds for the plant, and it will float a tender after getting the approval.

An engineer of CMC said that the project would need six months to invite bids, choose contractors, and give work orders for the plant. The deadline for completing the project from the beginning will be two years.
