The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has awarded contracts to process nearly 5,900 metric tonnes (t) of fresh municipal waste daily across five locations, officials said on Monday. The moves cover landfill sites at Okhla, Bhalswa and Ghazipur as well as the Narela-Bawana and Singhola facilities. The awards form part of a wider effort to manage incoming waste while remediation of older deposits continues.

Under the contracts Bhalswa will handle 1,800 t daily, Okhla will process 1,400 t, Narela-Bawana will accept 1,200 t, Ghazipur will take 800 t and Singhola will manage 700 t. The totals add to almost 5,900 t of fresh waste per day. Officials indicated the allocations reflect current capacity assessments at each site.

The contracts have been awarded to different firms that will be responsible for setting up required facilities and infrastructure at each location. Work to establish processing units will begin once detailed plans and installations are complete and approvals are in place. Fresh waste will be processed at the sites once the contractors commission the facilities.

The civic body has been working to clear legacy waste at the Ghazipur, Bhalswa and Okhla landfill sites and has revised earlier schedules for completion. The previous deadline of July 2026 for Okhla and Bhalswa has been extended to December 2026, while Ghazipur is scheduled for December 2027. Officials said the staggered timelines reflect operational and logistical considerations in remediation work.

The contracts are intended to prevent the accumulation of new garbage at landfill sites while legacy remediation continues and to ensure continuity in municipal waste management services. Firms awarded the contracts will be required to put in place the necessary infrastructure, systems and protocols to begin processing incoming waste at the designated capacities. The civic authority will monitor progress as installations proceed and legacy clearance efforts advance.
