MCD Councillors Flag Waste Management Gaps

Councillors of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) have flagged gaps in waste segregation and collection in their wards, and sought tighter monitoring of bulk waste generators. The issues were raised at a special meeting on implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.

The meeting was chaired by Deputy Mayor Monika Pant, with councillors seeking stronger registration and compliance mechanisms for bulk waste generators. They also called for regular awareness drives and improvements in waste collection, according to a statement issued by the deputy mayor’s office.

The meeting focused on segregation of waste into four categories at source. The MCD’s chief engineer briefed councillors on provisions of the new rules and stressed the need to keep separate the different types of waste generated by households, institutions, markets and other establishments.

Pant said awareness of the rules would not be sufficient without effective implementation on the ground. She emphasised the need for coordination between public awareness, enforcement and citizen participation in solid waste management.

Councillors also raised issues specific to their respective wards and suggested measures to improve segregation, collection and monitoring of bulk waste generators. In addition, they sought better safety and welfare measures for sanitation workers, linking improvements in waste management with stronger support for the personnel responsible for collection and handling.

The discussions placed implementation, rather than awareness alone, at the centre of the civic body’s approach to the 2026 rules. The demands for registration, compliance monitoring, regular public outreach and improved collection reflected concerns over how waste management measures are being applied across individual wards.
