MCD Launches Campaign To Explain Solid Waste Rules

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is preparing to roll out a three tier public awareness campaign on the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 to familiarise councillors, civic officials and residents with their responsibilities under the new framework. The Department of Environment Management Services (DEMS) has been tasked with framing distinct outreach modules for each audience and will coordinate the campaign across municipal zones. DEMS Committee Chairman Sandeep Kapoor described the initiative as a focused effort to translate regulatory requirements into practical action at ward level.\n\nThe campaign is intended to bolster source segregation and curb the volume of waste reaching Delhi landfills. It will emphasise the duties and penalties prescribed under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 while illustrating simple segregation practices for households and institutions. Separate education streams for councillors, MCD officials and the public are expected to tailor messaging to governance, operational and behavioural roles respectively.\n\nLieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu conveyed concern that nearly 50 per cent of Delhi's municipal waste is not segregated at source and that an equal proportion is being dumped at landfill sites. As part of the effort, concessionaires responsible for waste collection and management will be engaged to mobilise volunteers and interact directly with residents on segregation methods. The campaign will also seek to build administrative capacity within the corporation to monitor compliance and support enforcement.\n\nOfficials indicated the outreach drive forms part of a wider push by the civic body to strengthen urban sanitation outcomes and prolong landfill lifespans through upstream interventions. The initiative is pitched as a practical step to improve daily waste handling and reduce environmental pressure while clarifying legal obligations for all stakeholders. MCD and DEMS will proceed with phased implementation and stakeholder mobilisation across the city.
