Mumbai C&D Waste Collection Rises 46 Per Cent in 2026

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has intensified monitoring and enforcement of construction and demolition (C&D) waste management in Mumbai as part of air pollution mitigation measures overseen by the High Power Committee. The civic body said the quantity of waste reaching authorised facilities had increased substantially during 2026.

Approximately 206,000 t of C&D waste was collected between January 1 and October 18, according to information released by the civic administration. Around 201,000 t was processed during the same period, indicating that most of the material collected had reached processing facilities within the period under review.

The collection recorded in less than 10 months has already exceeded the approximately 169,000 t collected during the entire calendar year 2025. This represents an increase of about 46 per cent over the previous year’s full-year collection, even though the 2026 figures cover only the period up to October 18.

The rise has been reported in the context of tighter tracking and enforcement by the civic body. BMC’s monitoring focuses on ensuring that construction and demolition waste is directed to authorised facilities rather than being left at unauthorised locations or handled outside the designated system.

The civic administration is implementing the measures under the direction of the High Power Committee, which is overseeing initiatives related to reducing air pollution in Mumbai. The latest collection and processing figures provide an indication of the volume being brought into the formal waste-management network.

With more than two months remaining in the calendar year, the final 2026 collection total is expected to be higher than the figure recorded up to October 18. The data also highlights the increase in the quantity of C&D waste being tracked and processed through authorised channels compared with the previous year.
