Mumbai’s Deonar Waste-to-Energy plant to start within 3 months
Mumbai generates approximately 7,000 metric tonnes of waste daily. The Deonar dumping ground, operational since 1927, is burdened with a backlog of nearly 20 million metric tonnes of waste. The city has closed the Gorai and Mulund landfills, with Kanjur Marg currently being the only active one.
The Deonar plant, part of a sustainable waste management initiative, will help tackle the city's mounting waste issue. The BMC had faced delays in launching the plant, which began construction in June 2022 after initial bidding issues. The plant's contract was awarded to M/s Chennai MSW Pvt Ltd at a cost of Rs 6.48 billion.
