The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has announced a Rs 91.2 million lakefront development project for Porur Lake. The work is expected to be completed within eight months from the date of handing over the site to the appointed private firm.

The project will cover a 1.5-kilometre stretch along the lake’s edge and aims to balance environmental conservation with urban development. CMDA officials stated that the initiative will integrate infrastructure upgrades and community amenities while preserving the ecological value of the waterbody.

Porur Lake spans around 200 acres with a storage capacity of 46 million cubic feet, and supplies drinking water through four filtration units to the K. K. Nagar distribution system. “Porur Lake is not only a vital water source for Chennai but also plays a crucial role in biodiversity and climate resilience,” said a CMDA official.

The development will include both permanent and temporary structures such as entrance arches, shaded seating areas, and service infrastructure. Planned public amenities include walkways, cycle tracks, open gyms, children’s play zones, gazebos, kiosks, a public plaza, and designated parking for cars and two-wheelers.

Additional features include toilet blocks, seating, street furniture, signage, plumbing, irrigation, electrical installations, and sewage treatment systems.
