The Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES) has proposed the implementation of Metro rail to reduce traffic in the city five years after the UT Administration abandoned the project.
In order to recommend the best option for public transportation for the Tricity, the administration had assigned the work for preparation of the comprehensive mobility plan (CMP) for the tricity to RITES in March.
To meet the demand for the main travel directions in the city, RITES proposed a 64 km total Metro network in its draft report that was submitted to the administration.
The public sector undertaking (PSU) has suggested that the Metro system could be implemented in two phases based on primary surveys and data analysis.
In Chandigarh, the first phase would include three corridors that together would be 44.8 km long. The city's Metro system may have 16 km of underground space and the remaining 28.8 km of elevated space.
