The Phase II project of the Chennai Metro Rail is making significant strides on Corridor 5, which spans from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur, covering an extensive distance of 44.6 km.
Recent updates indicate that the crucial track work has commenced in a vital stretch, signifying a notable advancement in this ambitious expansion. Officials from Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) have officially confirmed the initiation of track work a few weeks ago between the planned Metro stations at Echankadu and Vellakal. Concurrently, the construction of piers along Corridor 5 is progressing at a rapid pace.
Corridor 5, along with the other two corridors in the 116-km Phase II project, incorporates a combination of elevated and underground sections. While the underground portion (Kolathur to Villivakkam) has encountered delays, the progress on the elevated stretches?from Madhavaram to Koyambedu, Koyambedu to Ullagaram, and Ullagaram to Elcot?is reportedly on schedule, as per The Hindu report.
An official stated, "In Corridor 5, we have to construct approximately 1,500 piers. Currently, we have completed around 150 piers between Madhavaram and Koyambedu, 142 between Koyambedu and Ullagaram, and 205 between Ullagaram and Elcot. Track laying has commenced in sections where the piers have been completed, such as between Echankadu and Vellakal stations."
The initial operational segment within Corridor 5, spanning from Madhavaram to Retteri, is projected to be operational by the end of 2026. Officials anticipate the initiation of track work on this segment in approximately six months.
Subsequent activities, including the installation of overhead electrical equipment, are scheduled to commence around the same time. Due to the predominantly elevated nature of most stretches in this corridor, construction progress has been notably swift, encountering fewer challenges compared to the underground section, as highlighted by another official.
Meanwhile, Chennai Metro Rail is currently focusing on completing construction between Poonamallee and Porur Junction, with the aim of commissioning by the end of 2025.
The overarching goal of this multi-corridor expansion is to enhance connectivity and address the growing transportation needs of Chennai's residents.
