The common belief that only the wealthy are behind in paying property tax was stated to be incorrect. According to data from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), it was shown that most defaulters owed less than 10,000 in property tax.

A staggering 3.3 lakh were reported to be in this group, which added up to 590.38 million in unpaid taxes. In contrast, it was mentioned that 136 owners with over 5 lakh in tax dues owed NMC a total of 580.53 million.

Upon closely examining the tax defaulters released by NMC, it was revealed that out of 7.05 lakh property owners in Nagpur, almost half or 3.4 lakh had not paid their property tax in the last financial year (2023-24). The total dues from them were reported to amount to 1.40 billion.

Furthermore, the data disclosed that residents from Ashi Nagar zone topped the list of defaulters among the 10 zones of NMC. It was indicated that a total of 80,815 owners there were yet to clear their dues. Nehru Nagar zone was mentioned to come next, with 52,289 property owners not paying tax for the financial year 2023-2024. Hanuman Nagar was said to have 40,503 defaulters, while Lakadganj was stated to be close behind with 40,388.

It was noted that in Mangalwari, 36,854 owners had not paid their tax. Laxmi Nagar was reported to have 30,942 defaulters, and Satranjipura was mentioned to have 20,542. Dharampeth zone reportedly had 20,047 property owners who hadn't paid their tax.
