Madurai Airport access road undergoes transformation

01 Aug 2023

In an effort to alleviate congestion and ensure a seamless commuting experience for travellers using the approach road to Madurai International Airport, the state highways department has initiated a project to expand the 2.5 kilometre two-way road between Avaniyapuram and Perungudi into a four-lane road. This enhancement comes at a total cost of 125.7 million.

Among all the access roads to the airport, the Avaniyapuram bypass - Perungudi segment of the Madurai-Thoothukudi state highways was the sole remaining two-way road, as all the others were upgraded to four-lane roads over the past decade.

Recent developments saw the state highways department upgrading two culverts along the 2.5-kilometer stretch. With the completion of land acquisition procedures, the road division work has commenced. A Kuttiyan, the Assistant Divisional Engineer of the state highways, revealed that the current 10-meter-wide two-lane road will be transformed into a 17.5-meter-wide four-lane road, featuring a median width of 2.5 meters.

"The road design will closely resemble the other approach roads to Madurai Airport, incorporating space within the median area for ornamental plants and ensuring ample lighting provisions," he stated. He further confirmed that the project is slated for completion within the next two months.
