JSW Steel, an iron and steel mills firm, reported the demise of Malay Mukherjee, who was an independent director of the company's board.

The steel firm announced the tragic passing of Malay Mukerjee, aged 74 years, on January 29, 2022, battling Covid-19 in a hospital in New Delhi.

Mukherjee had around 40 years of experience in the mining and steel industry, from commercial to technical and administrative roles.

The company told the media that Mukherjee held positions such as CEO (ESSAR Steel Global), board member of directors (ArcelorMittal), member of the Group Management Board in charge of mines and operations in Asia, Southern Europe, CIS, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Africa.

He also had responsibility for its stainless steel, pipes, and tubes. On July 29, 2015, he joined JSW Steel.

JSW Steel informed that the company greatly profited from the leadership of Mukherjee during his term, especially as a chairman of the project review committee.

The firm revealed that his guidance and mentorship to senior associates in the company is unique and irreplaceable.

The passing away of Mukherjee would be an unrecoverable loss to the firm and the whole steel fraternity.
