UT Administration to relocate Dhanas Marble Market

01 Oct 2023

The UT administration is set to shift the existing marble market in Dhanas to a newly planned bulk material market in Sector 56-West, with an estimated cost of Rs 220 million. The comprehensive plan involves developing basic infrastructure such as dedicated road networks, water and sewer lines, a power substation, streetlights, and green spaces.

The detailed layout plan, approved by the UT administrator, outlines 191 plots, each of one kanal size, equipped with a basement and three floors. Adequate parking lots, public utilities, and commercial areas will be established to cater to the needs of shop owners and customers.

Allotment of the 191 plots will be conducted through e-auction, with existing marble market shop owners given priority based on the highest bids. The project, which aims to revitalize an abandoned area, is being coordinated among multiple departments.

Given the pending issue of the marble market with the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the UT administration is keeping the court informed of the ongoing developments. Physical surveys conducted in 2016 and 2018 revealed 162 marble shops and 20 miscellaneous shops in the existing Dhanas marble market. In consideration of these figures, 191 plots have been designated in the proposed market, with some shops designated for conversion into eateries.
