The Central Government launched the Smart Cities Mission (SCM) in June 2015. Around 100 smart cities were selected between January 2016 and June 2018 through four rounds of competition. The implementation of the projects under SCM has witnessed considerable progress. As of November 2021, 6,452 projects of Rs 1,849.98 bn have been tendered, from which 5,809 projects of Rs 1,565.71 bn are under implementation or completed.The speed of project implementation has increased by 270 per cent in projects tendered and 407 per cent growth in completed projects over the last 39 months. SCM extended the period of implementation to June 2023.
