Additional 27 ports to be linked via rail

Officials in India are proposing to connect 27 more ports to the rail network in order to expedite cargo movement. In this context, Indian Railways plans to install 3,000 km of train tracks as part of a massive project estimated to cost roughly $13 bn. Currently, 29 ports, including 12 of the country’s major ports, are connected to a rail network, allowing for faster and more cost-effective freight transportation. Chennai, Chidambaram, Cochin, Kolkata/ Haldia, Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamrajar, New Mangalore, Mormugao, Mumbai, JNPT, and Deen Dayal Port Kandla are the 12 major ports with train connections.
