BERC Proposes Higher RPO Targets for 2030

The Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission (BERC) has proposed revised Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) targets for the state, aligning with India’s national clean energy goals. The new targets aim to accelerate solar, wind, and hydropower adoption, ensuring Bihar contributes to the country’s renewable energy transition by 2030.

As per the proposal, electricity distribution companies and obligated entities must increase their renewable energy consumption in a phased manner. This move is expected to boost investments in Bihar’s solar parks, wind farms, and hydropower projects, helping meet growing power demands sustainably.

Higher RPO targets will encourage industrial and commercial consumers to integrate green energy solutions, reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The proposal also promotes open access power procurement, allowing businesses to purchase renewable energy directly from developers.

With these targets, Bihar aims to strengthen its clean energy infrastructure, attract private sector participation, and support India’s goal of achieving 50 per cent non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. The final approval of these targets will shape the state’s renewable energy roadmap, reinforcing Bihar’s role in the national sustainability agenda.
