In a bid to enhance passenger safety and improve operational efficiency, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has implemented a series of advanced surveillance and infrastructure upgrades at Level Crossing (LC) gates across its network.

According to Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of NFR, high-resolution CCTV cameras have been installed at 28 LC gates to reduce risks associated with unauthorised access and vehicle obstructions. The deployment includes 4 cameras in the Alipurduar Division, 17 in Lumding, and 7 in Tinsukia. These installations enable real-time monitoring by railway staff, facilitating quick responses to potential hazards and contributing to safer train movement.

Additionally, nine IP-based CCTV cameras have been installed at Railway Protection Force (RPF) posts in Katihar, Alipurduar, Lumding, and Tinsukia divisions to bolster security.

To reinforce surveillance at remote signalling locations, six cameras have been mounted at Intermediate Block Signalling (IBS) huts in the Hasimara–Kalchini section of the Alipurduar Division.

As part of its infrastructure modernisation strategy, NFR has also introduced interlocking systems at key LC gates. These systems synchronise gate barriers with train movements, ensuring automated and secure operation during train crossings. This integration not only enhances safety but also reduces the likelihood of human error.

Furthermore, 29 Sliding Boom Barriers have been deployed across divisions to provide an additional layer of protection. In the Lumding Division, rubberised surfacing is being introduced at 15 LC gates to reduce the risk of vehicle skidding, thereby improving the road–track interface.

These initiatives underline NFR’s ongoing commitment to modernising railway infrastructure, improving safety protocols, and delivering a secure and seamless travel experience to passengers across the region.
