Thiruvananthapuram to cancel detailed town planning schemes

The civic body of Thiruvananthapuram has decided to recommend the state government cancel the detailed town planning (DTP) schemes in the city. The matter was included in the agenda of the council meeting held on July 14, which apparently was declared as passed amid the din. No discussion was held on the cancellation of DTP schemes in the city during the council meeting.

The move follows a directive from the high court on varying DTP schemes in civic bodies owing to complaints being raised by the applicants for building permits.

The civic body assessed that the interim development order (IDO) is in effect in the city as per the land utilisation pattern and that major schemes under the DTP schemes have already been implemented in the city.

The corporation also noted that even without DTP schemes, the land-related development of the city won’t be affected as IDO has been implemented. A meeting held on June 30 in the mayor’s chamber also upheld this decision.

There are 12 DTP schemes within the city corporation. As per the procedure, a special committee has to be constituted to review the DTP schemes and suggest variations. This will then be approved by the council and forwarded to the state government. Even in the preparation of a draft master plan for 2040, the town planning department has mulled revoking the existing DTP schemes.
