Shillong on seven September 2026 — The Meghalaya government has ordered a suspension of all operations by Shree Cement Limited (Shree Cement) in East Jaintia Hills until a fact-finding committee completes its inquiry, the state told the Meghalaya High Court (High Court). The submission was made in a public interest litigation brought by the Jaintia Students Union (JSU) general secretary Neilkee Mukhim. The government said the decision followed a meeting on 26 August with stakeholders including the Khasi Students' Union (KSU).

The affidavit filed before the Division Bench of Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice W Diengdoh stated that the committee will be independent and led by a senior officer. It will be mandated to examine environmental, social, legal and criminal issues raised by the KSU in its memorandum and to present a comprehensive assessment to inform further action. The affidavit also indicated that the inquiry would assist in reaching an inclusive decision that considers all stakeholder concerns.

The state reported that police and district administration have been directed to maintain order and prevent untoward incidents while the inquiry is under way. The petitioner submitted a further affidavit accompanied by photographs and a pen drive alleging violations by authorities, and the government sought time to respond to those claims. The Division Bench recorded that the matter would be placed on the board for hearing on 29 September 2026.

The developments follow sustained agitation in parts of East Jaintia Hills and concerns expressed by local bodies over environmental and social impacts of industrial activity. Stakeholders who attended the 26 August meeting were reported to include student organisations and local officials, and the government indicated the committee's findings would provide a basis for a measured response. The administration emphasised that ensuring peace and an orderly inquiry remained a priority while deliberations continue.
