Coal production in India rose by seven point five one per cent year-on-year in July 2026, reaching 69.75 million tonnes (mn t) provisional, compared with 64.88 million tonnes in July 2025. Coal dispatch in July recorded a stronger increase of 17.34 per cent year-on-year, amounting to 86.33 mn t provisional against 73.57 mn t in the same month last year. The ministry described the gains as reflecting sustained operational stability across the sector and steady efforts to ensure supply.

The cumulative coal production up to July in fiscal year 2026-27 stood at 302.24 mn t provisional, while cumulative dispatch reached 354.70 mn t provisional. These figures represent a growth of five point eight seven per cent over the same period in the previous financial year. Officials attributed the expansion to coordinated actions across mines, logistics and distribution that supported higher offtake.

Coal India Limited (CIL) was reported to have contributed 50.35 mn t to July production, registering growth of eight point four two per cent over July 2025. CIL dispatches in July were recorded at 63.67 mn t, up 17.43 per cent year-on-year, and the cumulative dispatch by CIL to July in FY 2026-27 showed growth of six point eight one per cent. The company’s output and dispatch performance was presented as a major factor in the national surge.

The ministry reiterated its commitment to sustainable growth, improved coal availability and reduced dependence on imports as part of broader energy security objectives. With the current momentum, the coal sector is positioned to continue supporting industrial demand and power generation needs. Maintaining logistics and safety standards will be important to sustain these trends.
