India's coal production rose seven point five one per cent year-on-year in July 2026, with output reaching 69.75 million tonnes (mn t) provisional compared with 64.88 mn t in July 2025. Coal dispatch in July registered a 17.34 per cent increase to 86.33 mn t from 73.57 mn t a year earlier. The Ministry of Coal attributed the rise to sustained operational focus and measures to ensure steady supply across the sector.

The cumulative coal production up to July in the financial year 2026-27 stood at 302.24 mn t provisional, while cumulative coal dispatch reached 354.70 mn t provisional. This represented a growth of five point eight seven per cent over the same period of the previous financial year. Officials noted that the provisional figures indicate ongoing recovery and improved logistics performance across key basins.

Coal India Limited (CIL) contributed 50.35 mn t to July production, registering a growth of eight point four two per cent over July 2025, and it dispatched 63.67 mn t in July, recording a 17.43 per cent increase over the same month last year. The cumulative dispatch by CIL up to July in FY 2026-27 showed a growth of six point eight one per cent compared with the corresponding period. Company scale and network enhancements were cited as supporting factors.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to sustainable growth, improving coal availability and reducing import dependence while maintaining operational stability. It described the sector's performance as pivotal to powering economic activity and meeting energy requirements. The provisional nature of the numbers was emphasised and the authorities indicated that final figures will be published after reconciliation processes.
