The National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) senior management visited the Donimalai Complex in Karnataka to review strategic initiatives to strengthen operational efficiency and promote responsible mining. The review assessed progress on projects intended to transform Donimalai into a future-ready mining complex and to reinforce NMDC's position as India's largest and a responsible iron ore producer. The delegation examined measures to improve employee welfare and community living standards alongside environmental stewardship.

Management reviewed capacity expansion and infrastructure works aimed at achieving a production target of 10 mn tpa (million tonnes per annum) from the Kumaraswamy Mine and 17 mn tpa from the Donimalai Complex. These enhancements form part of NMDC's wider vision to reach 100 mn tpa. The assessment included logistics and dispatch planning to support higher throughput while maintaining regulatory compliance.

The management examined technologies to utilise iron ore containing up to 35 per cent Fe and to process iron ore slimes and low-grade iron-bearing materials such as Banded Hematite Jasper (BHJ) and Banded Hematite Quartzite (BHQ). Through beneficiation and scientific mineral processing NMDC is converting underutilised resources into usable raw material and recovering additional ore from existing mines. This approach is designed to minimise waste generation, improve mineral conservation and reduce the environmental footprint of operations. The initiative is expected to contribute to raw material requirements of India's steel sector.

The visit included review of a newly implemented automated gate management system at the Kumaraswamy Mine that enables real-time monitoring and verification of material movement, strengthening transparency in dispatches and reducing manual intervention. Delegates also witnessed the inauguration of developed infrastructure facilities including High-Rise Towers that reflect a commitment to employee well-being and community development. Amitava Mukherjee, chairman and managing director, outlined a vision to make the Donimalai Complex a model of responsible mining and innovation while supplying high-quality iron ore to the domestic steel industry. He conveyed that NMDC will focus on maximising resource value through technology and promoting sustainable and responsible practices across operations.
