Tata Steel Secures Interim Relief In Jharkhand Coal Demand Case
The case concerns an aggregate demand issued by the District Mining Office, Ramgarh, which on March 30, 2026 sought Rs 17,551 mn from the company. Tata Steel received the notice on April three. The demand arose from allegations that Tata Steel extracted approximately 16.2 mn t of coal beyond permissible limits from the West Bokaro Colliery during the seven-year period covering FY2000-01 to FY2006-07. The DMO said the basis for the demand reflected principles noted by the Supreme Court in the Common Cause versus Union of India matter.
Tata Steel disputed the demand, describing it as lacking substantive basis, and filed a revision application with the Revisional Authority on April 24. The respondents in the proceedings are the State of Jharkhand through the Secretary, Department of Mines and Geology, and the District Mining Officer, Ramgarh. The Revisional Authority heard the application on August 20 and a copy of its order was provided to the company on August 24.
The Revisional Authority directed the respondents not to undertake coercive steps against the company pursuant to the impugned demand notices during the pendency of the application, effectively restraining enforcement for the time being. The interim order does not annul the demand and the substantive dispute will remain before the authority until a final decision is rendered. The ruling therefore represents a temporary procedural outcome rather than a determination on liability.
