EIL Wins USD 450 mn Dangote Contract for Kenya Refinery

State-owned Engineers India (EIL) has secured a contract worth more than USD 450 mn from Nigeria-based Dangote Group for a greenfield refinery and petrochemical complex in Kenya. EIL will provide project management consultancy and engineering, procurement and construction management services for the 700,000-barrels-per-day facility.

Dangote will develop the project as part of its expansion into East Africa. The complex is intended to meet the region’s rising demand for petroleum products, reduce dependence on imports and supply refined products to international markets.

The contract broadens EIL’s existing relationship with Dangote Group. The Indian company is already serving as project management consultant and engineering, procurement and construction management consultant for Dangote’s 650,000-barrels-per-day refinery and petrochemical complex at the Lekki Free Zone in Nigeria.

The Lekki refinery produces gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and polypropylene and is among the world’s largest single-train refineries. Dangote is also working to raise its capacity to 1.4 mn barrels per day, with EIL involved in the expansion programme.

The proposed Kenyan complex is designed to process a wider range of crude oil and strengthen fuel supplies in East Africa. EIL operates under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and provides engineering consultancy and project management services across refining, petrochemicals, oil and gas, fertilisers and infrastructure.

The company said the award reflects Dangote Group’s confidence in its ability to manage large and complex energy projects. The Kenya assignment is also expected to expand EIL’s presence in Africa, where it has participated in several energy and industrial developments. Once completed, the refinery is projected to support regional fuel production, reduce reliance on imported petroleum products and provide supplies for global markets.
