Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) said it had secured a Rs 10.32 billion (bn) contract from Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) for the design and construction of four platform supply vessels to support offshore exploration and production. The notification of award was received on July 30, 2026, and the scope includes design, construction and delivery of vessels compliant with the rules of the Indian Register of Shipping. The contract value signals GRSE’s growing presence in commercial and offshore segments alongside its defence work.

The vessels are to have an overall length of 80 metres, a beam of 20 metres and a deadweight capacity of 3,000 tonnes, with an endurance of 45 plus three days and a clear deck area of about 650 square metres. They will be capable of a wide range of offshore logistics and support missions, including supply runs and emergency response. Technical specifications reflect an emphasis on operational flexibility and cargo handling capacity.

GRSE indicated that the platform supply vessels will incorporate an advanced hybrid propulsion architecture featuring electrically driven azimuth thrusters and a lithium ion battery energy storage system. The battery system is intended to assist peak load management, provide spinning reserve, enable dynamic positioning operations and support emergency response functions, thereby improving efficiency and reducing environmental impact. The configuration is aimed at lowering fuel consumption and emissions during typical offshore operations.

With more than six decades of shipbuilding experience, GRSE has delivered in excess of 800 platforms, including 118 warships for the Indian Navy, the Indian Coast Guard and foreign customers. The company stated that the latest order further extends its capability to deliver technologically advanced and environmentally sustainable maritime solutions. The project is expected to reinforce the Kolkata based yard’s credentials in hybrid propulsion and offshore support vessel construction.
