High Petrol Prices Drive 56 Per Cent Surge In Jharkhand EV Sales

Electric vehicle (EV) sales in Jharkhand rose more than 56 per cent year on year in June 2026, supported by high petrol prices, lower running costs and growing concerns over compatibility of older vehicles with E20 fuel. Retail sales data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations showed 4,274 EVs were sold in June, compared with 2,731 units a year earlier. The state’s growth lagged the national increase of 62.83 per cent.

Users estimate running costs at around Rs one to Rs one point five per kilometre, depending on vehicle, electricity tariff and charging method. Petrol prices above Rs 105 per litre have increased monthly fuel expenses for regular car users by an estimated Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000. The rollout of petrol containing twenty per cent ethanol, E20, has influenced purchase decisions. Some vehicle owners have reported a mileage reduction of five per cent to eight per cent after using the blended fuel, though these claims have not been independently verified.

FADA data showed the share of electric two-wheelers in Jharkhand rose from 7.34 per cent in June 2025 to 10.60 per cent in June 2026, while petrol-ethanol two-wheelers fell from 92.44 per cent to 89.33 per cent. A similar shift was recorded in the commercial vehicle segment, where EVs increased market share from 1.57 per cent to 3.53 per cent and the share of CNG and LPG vehicles rose from 11.31 per cent to 12.87 per cent. Diesel commercial vehicles remained dominant, but their share declined from 82.79 per cent to 80.18 per cent.

Overall vehicle sales in the state during June were among the strongest recorded, with EVs and alternative-fuel vehicles gaining ground as buyers increasingly considered operating costs and fuel compatibility. The trend places greater emphasis on supporting infrastructure and manufacturer guidance on E20 compatibility, which will be central to sustaining adoption rates. Policymakers and industry participants will monitor developments in running costs and fuel performance as the market evolves.
