Arunachal Pradesh Signs Deal for 1,750 MW Demwe Lower Project
The project has an installed capacity of 1,750 megawatt (MW), comprising five generating units of 342 MW each and one unit of 40 MW. It is expected to generate approximately 7,326 million (mn) units of electricity annually, which the statement said will contribute materially to the country’s energy security. The site benefits from strategic connectivity via Dibrugarh airport and Tinsukia station in Assam.
The design envisages a concrete gravity dam with a maximum height of 163.12 metres above the deepest foundation and a total crest length of 474.35 metres. At full reservoir level the storage capacity will be about 516.38 mn cubic metres and the water spread area roughly 1,131 hectares. The engineering plans include a modern spillway system combining surface ogee and sluice spillways fitted with multiple gates to manage flood discharge.
The scheme incorporates six diversion tunnels, underground pressure shafts and a large surface powerhouse on the right bank of the Lohit River. The powerhouse will employ vertical Francis turbines operating at a design head of 112 metres and a design discharge of 1,729 cumecs. The infrastructure has been conceived as a major engineering initiative requiring extensive civil and mechanical work.
The state government said the project is expected to generate employment, accelerate infrastructure development, improve connectivity and stimulate wider economic activity in the region. The agreement signing was presented as aligning with broader objectives to expand renewable energy capacity and regional development. Officials described the venture as a significant step in state private sector collaboration on hydropower.
