The Jammu and Kashmir Council of Ministers has approved power infrastructure projects totalling Rs 930 mn to strengthen electricity transmission and supply in Srinagar and adjoining areas. The approvals were taken at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and were announced by the Office of the Chief Minister. The package comprises upgrades to a key grid substation and reinforcement of transmission lines. Officials said the measures respond to growth in demand and aim to bolster system resilience.

The plan provides for augmentation of the Grid Sub Station at Zainakote from 450 megavolt-ampere (MVA) to 780 MVA at a cost of Rs 676.6 mn. It also covers upgradation of the 132 kilovolt (kV) Pampore–Rawalpora and Rawalpora–Bemina transmission lines at an estimated cost of Rs 254.7 mn. The figures were disclosed by the Office of the Chief Minister.

The measures are intended to enhance transmission capacity, reduce outages and support a more reliable and efficient electricity supply for residential and commercial consumers. Strengthening the sub station capacity is designed to ease congestion on local networks and improve service quality during peak demand. Reinforcement of the 132 kV corridors will underpin distribution stability across urban and adjoining localities. Improved voltage stability will benefit critical services and commercial establishments.

The Office of the Chief Minister announced the approvals on X, noting the investments and technical upgrades. The council said the projects will be implemented by the local power department in coordination with relevant agencies and will include rehabilitation and commissioning works. Officials indicated the upgrades form part of wider efforts to modernise the electricity network in the region. Project execution will involve tendering, procurement and scheduled commissioning overseen by designated authorities.
