Centre has approved Rs 1,667 crore for a new integrated terminal and allied works at Srinagar Airport, the Rajya Sabha was told. Union Minister for Civil Aviation Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu provided the information in response to a starred question by Rajya Sabha member Ghulam Ali on civil aviation schemes, airport projects and employment generation in Jammu and Kashmir. He also said construction of a new terminal building at Jammu Airport is under way.\n\nThe Rs 1,667-crore Srinagar Airport project comprises a new integrated terminal building, extension of the apron, residential quarters for Airports Authority of India staff and CISF barracks. The amount converts to Rs 16,670 million (mn), about Rs 16.67 billion (bn). Million (mn) and billion (bn) are defined on first mention and the abbreviations will be used subsequently.\n\nThe Ministry of Civil Aviation said development of an interim terminal building at Udhampur Airport is currently in the planning stage, while no airport project has so far been taken up at Kishtwar. The minister set out priorities for regional infrastructure and indicated that resources were being allocated to enhance capacity and security at key airports. The information was supplied to the upper house as part of routine parliamentary oversight.\n\nOn regional connectivity, the minister said two Regional Connectivity Scheme routes linking Jammu with Bathinda and Gwalior were operationalised in 2018 and 2019 respectively. The government has disbursed Rs 39.86 crore in Viability Gap Funding for the two routes, equivalent to Rs 398.6 million (mn). Subsequent references use the mn abbreviation for million.\n\nThe announcement will support improved passenger handling and staff accommodation as traffic grows and will include extension works to aircraft manoeuvring areas. Implementation timelines and contractor details were not specified in the statement to Rajya Sabha. The minister's reply forms part of ongoing monitoring of aviation projects in the union territory.
