India Urges Global Cooperation on Energy Security at G20 Meet
In his address, the Minister underscored that energy security remains one of the most pressing challenges for the Global South, urging strengthened G20 cooperation to ensure economic stability, sustainability, and equitable access to energy for all.
Highlighting India’s progress, Manohar Lal noted that the country has achieved its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target of 50 per cent non-fossil fuel capacity five years ahead of schedule, reaching the goal in 2025 instead of 2030. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to becoming a global hub for green hydrogen production, advancing sustainable development, and achieving 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047.
The Minister also emphasised the success of India’s Biofuels Programme, noting that the country has attained 20 per cent ethanol blending and now leads the Global Biofuels Alliance, which includes 32 countries and 14 international organisations.
Acknowledging the disproportionate impact of climate change on developing nations, he called for climate justice, reiterating the need for climate finance and technology transfer as part of commitments under the Paris Agreement.
Drawing attention to the energy access gap in Africa, Manohar Lal reaffirmed India’s support for Mission 300, an initiative aimed at electrifying 300 million Africans by 2030. He stressed that collective efforts and solidarity among nations are crucial to achieving universal and sustainable energy access.
In his closing remarks, the Minister urged all nations to build resilient, inclusive, and sustainable energy systems through collaboration and innovation. He also extended an invitation to global partners for the upcoming “Bharat Urja Manthan – A Global Energy Conclave”, to be held in March 2026 in New Delhi.
On the sidelines of the G20 meeting, Manohar Lal held bilateral discussions with Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, Minister of Electricity and Energy of South Africa, and Lars Aagaard Møller, Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities of Denmark, to strengthen cooperation in clean energy transition, renewables, and technology sharing.
