The Mizoram Government has proposed a 132 megawatt (MW) hydropower project on the Tuivai river in Saitual district near the Manipur border to boost electricity generation amid rising demand in the State. Chief Minister Lalduhoma chaired a high-level review meeting to expedite the proposed Tuivai Hydroelectric Project, which officials said carries an estimated cost of Rs 22,895 million (Rs 22,895 mn) and is expected to be completed within five years. Power Minister F Rodingliana and senior officials of the Power and Electricity Department reviewed the Detailed Project Report and indicated the proposal is ready for the tendering process.

Officials said the State is exploring implementation under the public-private partnership model and that annual financial requirements will be examined with the Finance Department. The project follows a revised design after surveys showed parts of the originally proposed dam area extended into neighbouring Manipur, and the updated plan reduces generation capacity from an earlier 210 MW to 132 MW. Background work on the Tuivai scheme dates to surveys by the Central Water Commission in 1992 and the revised DPR has now been prepared.

The move aims to address a widening gap between local generation and demand after the twentieth Electric Power Survey put peak power demand at 182 MW, with projections to reach around 213 MW by 2030. Mizoram has an installed generation capacity of 50.20 MW but actual production remains significantly lower and only around 10 per cent of the State's electricity requirement is currently met through local generation. The government spends nearly Rs 6,495.4 million (Rs 6,495.4 mn) annually on power purchases excluding transmission charges, reinforcing the priority to expand local capacity.

During the meeting officials also reviewed progress on the ongoing Tuirini Hydroelectric Project and implementation of works under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme. Discussions were held to prepare issues for the Union Power Minister ahead of his visit to the State. Officials said the next steps will focus on tendering, financing arrangements and coordination with central agencies to move the plan forward.
