PSPCL to Expand Punjab Transmission Capacity amid Rising Demand
Singh said increasing power generation alone would not be sufficient unless the transmission network was strengthened to enable the efficient transmission and distribution of available electricity. He said coordinated efforts were being made to enhance the network’s capacity so that it could meet Punjab’s power requirements in the coming years.
The utility has also launched a special drive to curb power theft and reduce line losses. Enforcement teams are carrying out field inspections, with action being taken against consumers who default on payments or are found involved in violations, including disconnection of electricity connections.
Punjab’s power demand reached a record 17,452 megawatts (MW) in July 2026. The state consumed around 76.05 bn units (MUs) during the year, while its total energy requirement for 2026-27 has been estimated at 86,228 MUs, with peak demand expected to reach 17,873 MW.
Singh attributed the sharp increase in demand to changing weather patterns and intense heat across Punjab. Electricity use was also pushed higher by the continuous operation of agricultural tubewells and pumps during the peak paddy transplantation season. PSPCL will continue strengthening its transmission and distribution infrastructure, improving revenue recovery and intensifying action against power theft and losses, he said.
